Sociolinguistics

Sociolinguistics is the study of languages in contact, dialectology, and other social aspects of language such as formal vs. casual registers, or male vs. female speech.  Variation and change are also aspects of sociolinguistics.  In this sense it is closely related to historical linguistics.  Instead of looking at change that has already occurred, sociolinguists look at change which is ongoing, when there is no clear 'winner'.
